<<I agree, but I would add this source is also the source of law and law enforcement. >> No problem... <<I believe that the source is simply the need of social beings for a set of rules to govern social conduct, and for mechanisms to encourage compliance with these rules and punish violators.>> I agree with everything here and would add that we have the ability to tap into a common source of morality that is a given. <<I notice that your list of possible sources omits practical experience of what works and what doesn't. Is there a reason for this?>> Yaah, I forgot to include it. Let me remind you that early on in this discussion I mentioned that we do have the ability to confirm what is good and right when we observe it in our experience, whether written, spoken, or acted out. Call it common sense if it helps but it is not always based on our individual historys of trial and error. <<Do we forbid murder, theft, and adultery because people prayed and meditated, dipped into the void and came out with the notion that these things were, in the abstract, "bad"? Or because people noticed that murder, theft, and adultery were almost always followed closely by destructive conflict within the group?>> A combination there of. If the world did not, or stopped, having instances of human violations of the "bad," then we could point at the scriptural messages and say they are baseless. We can observe for the first time some awful event, that bears no relation to our earlier experiences and confirm in our hearts that it is "bad". Our lives are perfect and just in this sense. We are warned about what dangers exist, seen and unseen, and then in our experiences we are able to confirm that the warnings are accurate. We are also given guidelines on how to approach the world, and then we are able to confirm that people who violate the guidelines fail. Of course there are plenty who believe they are exceptions and have a wait and see attitude. Fine.
