>A combination there of. If
the world did not, or stopped, having instances of human violations of the "bad," then we
could point at the scriptural messages and say they are baseless. We can observe for the
first time some awful event, that bears no relation to our earlier experiences and confirm
in our hearts that it is "bad". Our lives are perfect and just in this sense. We are warned
about what dangers exist, seen and unseen, and then in our experiences we are able to
confirm that the warnings are accurate. We are also given guidelines on how to approach
the world, and then we are able to confirm that people who violate the guidelines fail. Of
course there are plenty who believe they are exceptions and have a wait and see
attitude. Fine.<

You don't need to tap into some ethereal well of morality to recognize "badness" in novel situations- as humans we are capable of analogizing. We can see a new situation and compare it with all the other situations we have ever seen. We can then make a judgment on the situation without resorting to some connection to a "common source of morality that is a given." I certainly wouldn't agree that there is a "common source of morality that is a given" and I am fairly sure Steve wouldn't either. In fact that common source thing is the whole crux of our argument. You just threw it in as if it was a small modification- it is, in fact, the whole source of our disagreement- namely whether it is common, and from whence it(morality) comes.

Morality is not primarily directed towards survival or group cohesion. It is primarily a means of respecting our humanity, differentiating us from the beasts of the field, and treating us as persons rather than chattel........
