What's the next best means to short the $US other than selling a future contract? Are there options on currency contracts?

Yes there are options that one can buy on all of the
CME currency futures. They need to be bought from a
futures broker, hence one needs to have a futures account.

If one sees a big dollar decline and also expects higher
gold and commodity prices going forward they could
look at something like FAX which invests in Australian Govt.
Dept. If we see a rise in the AUD, back towards 70 cents
that fund could well move back towards 6 from it's current
4.31. It also pays a 12.5% dividend.

it was paying a .06 cent a month dividend this past year, but reduced it to .045 a month, they might cut that back to
.04 cents a month but it is still a nice yield play,
with the currency kicker.
