Joe, <Let me know when these applications that will need RDRAM arrive.>

That's kind of a non-argument. If current applications don't need RDRAM, they certainly don't need DDR as well.

Joe,

My computer has a more advanced memory: PC-100 CAS2 SDRAM, much faster that what my 286 had. And I have plenty of it: 384 MB.

Of course you do. That's because Intel never said "hey, we can do everything we need with the 286; we don't need to keep advancing the technology." You can do what you do because they kept building in new capabilities enabling new applications. Now you can watch movies on your PC, do high speed networking, etc. -- all things that would have never been possible with a 286.

The point is that new advances in technologies will enable even new technologies.

When what I have is not enough, I will upgrade my computer.

Of course you will. And the way technology is moving, that'll be in 3-4 years. Myself, I have a 3-4 year old computer and I keep running into bandwidth problems (mostly simultaneous streams) that I've detailed on this board before. And I'm not even doing things like video.

I would have to be out of my mind to spend extra $3,000 to get RDRAM instead of SDRAM.

Statements like that just diminish your credibility. At the end of this message are configurations for two equivalently configured Dell systems -- the B Series and the T Series:

As you can see, the difference is $2607 (B Series) - $2327 (T Series) = $280. And for that you get a 733Mhz processor instead of a 700Mhz processor.

$280 Joe, not $3000.

Dave
