I have a very bright and talented friend, B, who is strongly opinionated and convinced of the invincible truth of his beliefs (not at all unlike you.)

A few weeks ago we were discussing athletics, and he told me he "hated sports"--didn't see the need for them, thought they were the indulgence of testosterone amped simians whose minds weren't developed enough to entertain them. One day I dragged him to a professional basketball game, and what unfolded was quite remarkable. Soon enough he began to comment on the artistry of the players, he remarked how watching their skilled interactions was like listening to jazz--the improvisation within structure--and by then end of the game (a tight one the Hawks lost) he was on his feet with the rest of us cheering on the team and having a blast.

B will likely never become a jock; may never even pick up a basketball himself, but I give him credit for exposing himself to an experience that challenged his long held prejudice and ultimately opened his eyes to another realm of living. I doubt I'll ever hear him say he hates sports again, and bet he'll be willing to play a little more in his life.

We typically fear those things we resist the most. I've found that facing and exploring my fears opens gates to powerful and transformative experiences.

You're quite the fundamentalist yourself, Steven.

<<...than fundamentalist religion.>> Problem here. What you believe is fundamental to living. Even if you believe religion is a hoax that becomes fundamental to your life experience. Case in point is...you. To believe in God is in part a heart felt confirmation that what is revealed through a body of scripture is true and provides a foundation for your outlook on the life experience. I suspect you have another definition for fundamentalist religion that includes more political posturing on the part of religious people. What is your definition for fundamentalist religion?
