Pravin,

<Isn't anyone else worried about the recent revelation that VIA's WinChip5 is Socket A with SSE @ 750 Mhz...>

I am not convinced that a fabless house can compete with Intel and AMD in the forseeable future, especially the house is rooted in a traditional Chinese conglomerate. I posted several months ago (when VIA purchased Cyrix)that VIA will never be a serious threat to the core business of Intel and AMD unless they screw up themselves.

My take of this VIA's new wonder is that VIA wants a most cost effective platform to pick up some crumbs that Intel and AMD leave.

Just my 2 cents.

Pravin,

Are you referring to this info on JC's

* 128KB L1
* 256KB on-die L2
* FC-PGA370 support
* Possible 266MT/s Socket A support
* 750MHz and up operation
* SSE support

I guess the question is how good the core itself will be, when and at what speeds will it be available, who will be manufacturing it, at what cost.

If the chip was available today, it would be a problem for AMD. If it becomes available in Q1 2001, there is not that much to worry about.

They'll have the benefits of Socket A, and the compatibility of SSE that Scumbria has been suggesting that AMD needs.

I think the loss of X-box hurt AMD. The only way to make up for the position of weakness 3DNow may face would be to achieve the 30% of microprocessor market.

Joe

<< Isn't anyone else worried about the recent revelation that VIA's WinChip5 is Socket A with SSE @ 750 Mhz. This sound like a powerful combination that could hurt AMD in the low end. They'll have the benefits of Socket A, and the compatibility of SSE that Scumbria has been suggesting that AMD needs. If it were coming from the Cyrix guys, I wouldn't be worried, but the Centaur guys seemed like they had their act together a little more. >>

If it uses socket A, I think that's a benefit in disguise as it should inspire via to get the socket A chipsets out there in quantity. I'm not sure how dangerous the chip is, it obviously depends on a lot on the performance and not just the mhz) However, I think AMD can force the low end above that if it had to. Also, it will take awhile for the chip to get any respect in the market place. It could potentially be a danger, but we won't really know until we see how good it is.

Pravin, re:<Isn't anyone else worried about the recent revelation that VIA's WinChip5 is Socket A with SSE @ 750 Mhz>

One report said definite FCPGA 370 and possible socket A. Do they need AMD's blessing to legally do that? If I were AMD, I'd let them do it but only up to 650, maybe just to 600, assuming there were some royalties.
