I don't quite understand your comments. There is no reason I can see that ATHM won't support xDSL in the future.

My post never mentioned ATHM. It specifically refers to the MSOs. Therefore, the first half of your response is irrelevant. I was making a comparison of two existing, and not necessarily competing, technologies.

New users are astounded at the speed of CABLE and DSL when compared to modem speeds,

Really? I think new users are astounded by how slow access can be. These users know the bottlenecks are not in the last mile, yet.

When cable is finally ramped up, everyone will be complaining about how slow cable is because it is a shared resource.

Guess what - the internet is a shared resource.

I can't remember the specific areas, they are in Canada though (Jay, pipe in), but theses areas have already achieved 25% penetration without bandwidth problems.

Currently, cable has too many problems related to the shared nature of the system

Please support this claim. I don't buy it.

And if you use just a little leverage, you could even double or triple that. It takes time and patience to make money. Support the price now and then never look back.

LOL. You can't be serious? Leverage, no way, not on this stock.

Then AOL turned on the advertising and dropped the price to 19.95 for unlimited use. I've still got a few of their hi-tech frisbees that I keep around to remind me that everyone poopooed AOLs advertising strategy and the shorts were saying it was headed for 10.

I remember it as: Steve Case didn't want to drop the per minute charges. He had to because the unlimited access ISP's were beginning to erode AOL's growth. It was the best move Case made, and it was one the market forced him to do - kicking and screaming the whole way.

I don't see any fundamental difference in your view from my own. Although, obviously, I do disagree with some specific points.

The main point I was making, which seems to be the same point you are making, is that residential DSL is a stop gap measure for the RBOC's. HFC at this point, is well ahead of DSL and in terms of deployment and overall performance(considering only a small fraction of the available bandwidth is currently allocated for data services). This should become obvious as ITV is deployed.

Will the MSOs need to replace HFC networks with fiber?
Considering the the future bandwidth demands, of course.
