I had a similar reaction to his when I logged on to read SI at the public library without logging on as CobaltBlue - I was shocked to see ads in my posts. I think it sucks. Here we are, criticizing the same firms that we seem to be endorsing. There is also a lot more hostility on SI. It is worse other places, I was reading posts on the Gilder Technology website's new threads, and a lot of them were very nasty towards old George.
