Here's something I found on Transmeta.
transmeta.com
"Transmeta's software translates blocks of x86 instructions once, saving the resulting translation in a translation cache. The next time the (now translated) code is executed, the system skips the translation step and directly executes the existing optimized translation at full speed."

I could be wrong but this seems unsuited to hard real time applications. The software needs to make the decision "has this been translated before". If so it executes directly, but if it has not then it must translate the code which obviously is slower. This therefore introduces some uncertainty into timing issues. Just speculation.
