I think the conflict is not about human survival. Suppose you had a choice -- 99% chance that only Inuit and no one else would survive an nuclear war or a 0.00001 % chance that a random sample of 6.1 billion people would survive (including, perhaps, some of your genes). I think there is a question not only of quality of life of the survivors, but diversity and quality.
I don't think we have to save every tribe, every culture, every community or town to survive as a species. I am not even sure he have to preserve human culture. 25,000 years or so ago mankind was reduced to a few thousand survivors. And everything we are has grown after the great cutting off. I am not sure that a Strangelovian survival camp would be a very good idea.
But we should not fool ourselves. We do not help our children to survive and conquer because this is best for mankind, but because they are our children. We do not go down to dusty death to help someone else survive. Somewhere on earth there are hateful people who have the button to nuclear weapons. Some of them as mad as the Columbine killers (we had better hope they were insane). Had Hitler, Stalin or the Japanese warlords held the button to blow up the world and kill everyone rather than face defeat, would they have done so? If not, I can walk you to a nearby high-security prison with several dozen people that I fear would do the job, and I'm just talking prison guards.

Some of us would think resistance the right choice even had it been "unsuccesful", because the alternative was intolerable.......
