Intel has really never been on the cutting edge of microprocessors...Intel was broadsided ...The lesson here is that first, a market was created through the use of branding, and later manufacturing made it profitable

No... the lesson here is that Cyrix forgot their position in life and nipped and yapped at the heels of a giant until said giant chose to step back down the latter and kick Cyrix in the teeth. As Cyrix fell, it realized that its true mission in life was to pick up Intel's garbage and sell it at low margins... that it was a scavenger of dead product for the low end of the line. Intel never wanted that low margin crap and they were miffed that they had to step back down and plug the hole. Thereafter they moved back up to the cutting edge. Intel knew that it was necessary to remind Cyrix that it was only entitled to the crumbs that had fallen off the Intel table. That whole scenario reminds me of "Raiders of the Lost Ark", were Indiana Jones is challenged by an Arabic swordsman, who is waving and twirling his sword in a threatening manner... Jones takes out his gun and shoots him. You can't argue that by lowering the bar, Cyrix pushed the edge of the envelope... it doesn't hold water... and branding has nothing to do with it.

Lest you are tempted to correlate ATHM with Cyrix and AOL with Intel, keep in mind that ATHM is an Infrastructure Facilitator and AOL is a content provider. The only reason AOL kicked ATHM in the teeth is because ATHM became confused and disoriented and forgot their true vocation. In their delirium, they thought that they were competing with AOL.
