"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses . . ."
And, we'll spray them with high-powered hoses and mace?

Apparently, a few months ago, the U.S. Coast Guard in South Florida either forgot about or were unaware of the great words written by Emma Lazarus, displayed at the base of the Statue Of Liberty. No big deal, after all it was over a hundred years ago when Emma used these idealistic words to capture the essence and spirit of the American dream.

Fact is, Emma would roll over in her grave and, if alive, the great statue herself would lower her lamp beside the golden door, hanging her head in embarrassment and shame, especially when incoming Cubans were sprayed with mace and high-powered hoses to prevent their naked feet from making contact with American soil.

Forget about the "Clinton policy" or immigration rules, regulations and procedures and let's talk about plain 'ol human decency. What kind of person "in uniform" could actually carry out such deeds? Did we really train them for such "duty"? If so, maybe revisiting our entire refugee policy is the next logical step. Or maybe Emma was only talking about Europeans, nice all-white folks, ones we might fly in from Kosovo and carefully place in middle-class homes. In fact, it's highly doubtful if one European refugee has ever seen the inside of the Krome Detention Center.

Nevertheless and for whatever it's worth, this seems like a perfect occasion to once again display Emma's words in their entirety, remembering her American dream:

The New Colossus November 2nd 1883

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land,
Here at our sea-washed, sunset-gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles, From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome, her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin-cities frame,

"Keep, ancient lands, you storied pomp!" cries she,
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Emma Lazarus

Go girl!

Wally, I've been wading through the posts, too, and I find far too much politics in the arguments and far too little principle. Too much about Cuban-American relations. Too much about Presidential politics.

Seems to me the issue is how nations handle disputes between competing relatives in different countries. Doesn't matter if the countries are Cuba and the USA or Slovakia and Madagascar. There are lots and lots of cases of kids who get caught up in these disputes every day. Who decides? What criteria are used? Cultural superiority cannot be a factor because no court is independent enough to decide that. And surely it's not a matter of popular respect for the leaders of the nations, in this case Castro vs. Clinton!

What would people want done if an American kid washed up in Cuba? What if the father were Canadian rather than Cuban? Does anyone remember the TV movie about the woman who kidnapped her child back from the father who had kidnapped her and taken her to the Middle East, Jordan or Syria, as I recall? Thank goodness that at least there wasn't a religious element to further complicate the Elian situation.

It's universally accepted that six year olds don't get to make legal decisions for themselves. This child sadly has only one parent and it is he who speaks for the child. Only if we stick to generally accepted principles can we hope to protect all the children.

Our Village is full, we can't handle another.

It is always convenient for the likes of you to blame the media when something doesn't go your way.

The Miami relatives exploited the media for the last 5 months. The young girl flaunting her ass in tights in front of cameras never once missing an opportunity to get her face (and other parts) in front of the lens. Placing the boy at the window every once in a while to satisfy the needs of the scavenging reporters. And what about the family's release of the video last week.

If the media attention wasn't there, this matter might have been settled loooong ago.

By beating on the media now you are no better than a parasite....you feed off of your victim. After you finish your exploitation you trash them.

<< I am wading through the posts and have found you to be a light of hope in this dark thread. >>

Welcome aboard, and thanks. But, noble causes sometimes create strange bedfellows.

<< I don't know what scares me more, the actions of our president and his servant (that did the dirty work) or the people in this country, represented by those posting here, that praise him for it. >>

I find the actions of Janet Reno inexcusable, and I am worried about her rationality.

Why do you think that the majority want to send Elian back to imprisonment and possible torture in Cuba? If our history serves us, then it is racism against immigrants, as it was against the Irish and the Jews, etc. But, really, I don't understand it.
