The world-wide mandate for a reunion between Juan Miguel and Elian should really be separated from politics.

But if, as you and others here imply, a Republican president would, by nature, have lacked the courage to take decisive action and do the right thing, then this is just one more reason to vote against having Bush in the White House

However, neither Bush nor Gore has enough of a spine to agree with was done today. Instead, their desire for Florida' s electoral votes has both of them mouthing hollow "woulda coulda shoulda"-s.

Fortunately, with Janet Reno's help Elian has confounded the profoundly wacky right. Instead of turning into another weird martyr like Koresh, he's happily playing with his baby brother as I write.

For most of the Americans who will vote this fall and for the majority who won't, the issue had been one of responsibilty and family values. Elian is now where they/we believe he should be.

The methods arrived at and the question of law escapes me. If the authorities have the right to enter a home without permission then the individual or individuals inside are in violation of the law. At least that should be the case. If it is, then arrest warrants should have been in the possession of the federal police and/or the Miami cops. We simply can't have armed intrusions of our homes without the correct legal paperwork. It must be presented before commencing violent police action.

A court order would have been a redundancy. There had been enough delays. The INS was well within their powers. The Miami relatives are criminals.
