hey pw,

that post made me smile. thanks for trying. the dell tech absolutely can't believe that i still have some sounds when the icon drops off... "Just so I understand: You DO get sounds when the speaker is missing?" <g3> and this... "This IS strange. I know that the speaker icon will usually not even disappear when an error causes all other items in the system tray to go away."

it happened again the day after i first emailed dell about it, and i was able to provide him with more specific details about the occurrence. also, i uninstalled a program that i recently introduced to my system. although i swear this speaker icon thing was happening prior to the software install, i figured that it was the most recent change so it was valid to reverse it. and since the uninstall, no disappearing prob. but it's been less than two full days and that does not constitute an effective test. so i'll continue to monitor it.

:)

this looks great... from most current issue of pcworld mag

Empty the Temp Folder Automatically

"Can I set something up to automatically empty the
temp folder on a regular basis?

You can safely remove anything in C:\Windows\Temp
that was created before the current Windows session.

So the best time to have it automatically emptied is
during boot-up. Here's how to do that:

Select Start, Run, type the command sysedit and press
Enter to launch the System Configuration Editor. Once
there, go to the autoexec.bat window. That batch file
may contain text, or it may be blank. Either way, add
these two lines:

deltree /y c:\windows\temp
md c:\windows\temp

Save the file and exit the program.

From now on, you'll get an empty temp folder every time
you boot."

i'm going to try it right now.

:)

Hi PW, I need to wet my feet in Registry. Is this close?
START/RUN/REGEDIT/ok

Click on the +HKEY_Current_User,
" " " +Software,

scroll down to Quote.Com, highlite/edit/delete/
" " " Real Network ditto.

do i save or just OK on way out.?

i've removed these in Control Panel,also Start/Programs/Acessories
Removed all ShortCuts. But they still remain in Registry.
