I'm gonna go way out on a limb and guess that Vodafone, British Telecom, Telefonica, France Telecom, DoCoMo, DDI, Japan Telecom, J-phone, Mannesmann, Orange, KPN, Hutchison, Omnitel and TIM know what they are doing.

These operators have a combined market cap topping two trillion dollars. Is it really too much to assume that they have been able to hire an engineer or two?

You know - to conduct, like, surveys on the 3G situation and stuff? I think it's in Nokia's interest to give these operators what they want. What they appear to want is W-CDMA. Which certain other companies seem reluctant to endorse.
