Data Race branching out
with new office in Plano

Data Race Inc. is setting up a branch office
in the Dallas suburb of Plano, its first
expansion outside San Antonio, the company
announced Tuesday.

The expansion comes after company officials
and shareholders voiced concern that the
biggest problem facing the company's
technology products is slow sales.

Tuesday's announcement comes as Data
Race prepares to make a "major
announcement" Monday. The company's
chief operating officer, Michael McDonnell,
declined to elaborate.

The Plano facility will house sales and
marketing personnel, and eventually a new
engineering development group.

Data Race's products let remote computer
users access a corporate network and work
as if they were in the office, while also
transmitting voice and data simultaneously
over a single telephone line.

"The company is growing," McDonnell said.

"We feel that being able to aggressively grow
requires that we have more than one leg on
the ground."

Plano was chosen for expansion because of
access to the Dallas labor market and for
airline flights to national and international
business cities, McDonnell said.

"It's much easier to recruit in the Dallas area
for sales and marketing types than in San
Antonio," he added.

The Plano facility is about 20 miles north of
downtown Dallas and will house about 35
employees.

Meanwhile, Data Race will continue
operations in San Antonio.

"I made a commitment to the employees and
to the board that we will retain a presence in
San Antonio," McDonnell said.

McDonnell, who lives in Plano, will be
splitting his time between the two cities.

McDonnell has been running the company's
day-to-day operations since its former chief
executive and president, W.B. "Ben" Barker,
recently retired.
