You had better read a better account. The attackers were a detachment of marines led by Lieutenant Israel Green under the overall command of Col. Robert E. Lee, USA (detached). I believe he was at Arlington settling his father in law's estate and freeing his slaves. On extended leave, after leaving his command of the 2d Cavalry in Texas. There were several companies of Virginia militia at the site.
