Trent Lott will be conducting hearings on this issue

Considering Lott's pathetic history of impotence in congressional hearings I would only expect him to make a greater than usual ass out of himself.

It will be great for a laugh and it will probably embarass the hell out of Dubya as well.

They spent months trying to extract Elian in a peaceful manner. Handing him over peacefully was beyond the question because then Lazaro and Sleysis would have been tar and feathered by their Miami compadres. This was a result Lazaro and Sleysis had to have to save face in their community.

When you understand that, you'll understand why a rapid action was necessary in that highly-charged, potentially violent atmosphere.
