John,
Since I bought my CUBE shares in 1996, when I figure my cost basis, can I still consider it to be a long term gain if I were to sell it this year, or does the IRS consider it to be an acquisition this tax year - and therefore a short term gain? How about HLIT? Can I sell it this year as a long term gain? Thanks for any insight.
Also, in your example, after the merger your CUBE is worth $1000 instead of $2000, so your % will be 79.08 for HLIT and 20.92 for CUBE (I think). I'm not trying to be a smart a$$, just trying to understand the math, because I have been pondering about this same thing. Thanks for posting your message.
