When you have questions like, "How about required literature?" I get a little suspicious that you may be more naive than I thought. What do you think should be required in a literature course? The process of reading, analyzing, and critiquing a rich variety of literature is important IMO. Requiring certain texts does little more than indoctrinate children into a specific inculturation. Not good IMO. This type of required reading is like the other side of the book burning coin (You MUST accept Homer's view of culture as good and right).
