I think what we're agreeing on then is that the only solution is to remove this from all extraneous influences and settle it in the courts, which strikes me as right except that I worry about the bias against the father if he wants to return to Cuba. I don't know what our response to Haitian children would be- or is- but the kids in the projects are OURS. They are HERE. They belong to us. They are us. Elian is cute and helpless. He is a kitten of a child bringing out all the savior complex in the people around him. The black sixteen year old with the ring in his nose and pants falling off has us crossing to the other side of the street and looking for a police car. We are only human, and we are vulnerable to these things. If I were an alien coming to take over the world, I would come as a puppy with big soulful eyes.
