BTW why do you need to wait for PCs to become cheaper before upgrading?? Aren't they cheap enough? Don's responding to a PM that I sent him which I'll go ahead and make public (I'm stepping out on a big limb here with a prediction )... I think we're going to see the Mother Of All Price Wars in the processor market this Summer. I suspect that Scumbria is at least partly right when he says that the great performance of the PIII/820/RDRAM combo is not just due to the RDRAM. If AMD's new processors are performance competitive with Intel (and my guess is that they will be), Intel will ignite a price war that will scorch the earth from Oregon to Maine and British Columbia to Baja California. A couple of days ago I was reading a January issue of PC World (catching up on old issues!) and the roadmap they were talking about just 4 months ago were 1Ghz processors in Q4 of this year! Yet they were announced and began shipping at the very beginning of Q2! I think we're about to see a battle royale. The ultimate winner will be the customer, and the ultimate (perennial!) loser will be AMD. Intel can bleed a lot, lot longer than AMD can and Intel can NOT afford to let AMD get a serious position in the high end market. But in the end, my guess is that processor prices are going to come down very, very fast as new product schedules get accelerated. FWIW, Dave p.s. To answer your question, Don, if we start to see a price war, I don't mind waiting a couple more months to get better performance. Since I need computers for the kids anyway, buying a low-end one now (which would still be faster than what I'm using now) wouldn't be wasted money. I still haven't decided what I'm going to do, though.
