Sony has stumbled badly.

Ron,

It seems like Sony has not only stumbled, but it took a header as well!

I think it was very intelligent of the SDMC Association to wait and see how the public reacts to Sony's initial foray into secure distribution of content before dedicating a large scale production of the SDMC's. It appears that Sony is being forced to cut through the underbrush and clear a path. That was just brilliant planning. And if initial public acceptance is lukewarm the SDMC Association may wish to commit a smaller amount of production capacity to these cards for first generation players until the dust settles.

Specifically regarding Magic Gate, at BestBuy there is also a disclaimer taped onto the front of the Sony digital music player stating that you have to have Windows 98 on your PC at home, perhaps due to USB compatibility. Additionally, someone posted to the site you mentioned that the "purple" Memory Schticks don't work in the ANTHRAX3 players that Sony is promoting. This eliminates the possibility of cross-platform compatibility between digital cameras and Internet music players.

MMC will be forward compliant with SDMC, so users may choose to "turn-off" security features to enjoy their own CD collections they may have archived in MP3 format.

The bottom line...

ANTHRAX3...avoid it like the plague.
