The very tendency to dictate from without to cubanos that they remake their nation into a form designed by others than themselves is the single worst effect of the US extreme rightists, it feeds the xenophobia that Castro needs to keep solid his support.

That xenophobia has considerable basis in history - Cuba has since Columbus been dictated to from without, quite continually. A short hundred years ago, the US was waging war to establish its power to do the dictating to Cuba. It betrayed the mambises, the indigenous guerrillas, to solidify power in its own hands. Less than fifty years ago the CIA was pulling the strings of the pig Batista, and within less than fourty they were aiding mercenaries to invade its shores. Read Mart¡ - his worst case scenarios came to pass.

Every time Cuba is threatened from without, Castro is empowered a little more, he has a little higher pile of rhetorical ammunition to sit on .... It is imho a major mistake to continue to add to his arsenal by bullying Cuba just because it is smaller than China so you are physically able to get away with it and your rightwing demagogues need a symbolic example to justify their ideology.

"They want to be friends, but they won't surrender."

As to tactics - i don't think stealing their six-year-old sons will work either .. lol
