if you opt to delve into the finer print: optical revs grew 150% YoY and 23% sequentially (driven largely by OC-192).

Chris, thanks. I don't have/follow NT much but saw some info re optical business gains. Didn't hurt my JDSU one bit. Ya gotta admit, us Canadians are a darn sharp bunch, eh? Heck, even AMCC is moving into town. :-)

AMCC Announces GANGES IC, The Industry's First OC-192/STM-64 Framer Device To Support Both Channelized and Concatenated 10-Gigabit Traffic

Integrated Framer Solutions for Carrier-Class Core Routers and

Switches

Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) (Nasdaq:AMCC), a leader in high-bandwidth silicon connectivity solutions for the world's optical networks, today announced the availability of the GANGES (S19202), the industry's first OC-192 framer that supports full-duplex mapping of ATM cells or packet-over-SONET (POS) for either concatenated or channelized SONET/SDH payloads.

The addition of GANGES to AMCC's framer/PHY product line provides customers with the most complete offering of framers and PHYs at OC-192/STM-64 on the market today.

GANGES will support a single OC-192c or four OC-48c/STM-4 fiber interfaces with concatenated traffic. It also supports channelized traffic on a single OC-192/STM-64 or four OC-48/STM-16 fiber interfaces with logical combinations of STS-48's and STS-12's with as many as 16 STS-12's. OC-192/STM-64 or 16 OC-12c/STM-4 SONET/SDH payloads.

This inherent flexibility, coupled with high performance makes this device ideal for use in carrier-class core routers and switches enabling ISPs to quadruple the throughput of the IP data networks (see Figure 1). Consistent with previous framer offerings, the GANGES also allows for the mapping of any type of traffic including 10-Gigabit Ethernet.

GANGES joins the recently announced INDUS (S19201) framer IC and the S3091/S3092 PHY to form a complete the OC-192 product family. These products put AMCC in a position to support any type of traffic including ATM, IP, 10-Gigabit Ethernet, DWDM and TDM at OC-192/STM-64 data rates. "This announcement demonstrates our commitment to OC-192/STM-64 as a mainstream technology for the emerging public network," said Ram Sudireddy, vice president -- Digital Products of AMCC. "We are committed to deliver the most complete set of products for OC-192/STM-64, which include framers, performance monitors, FEC, PHYs, and with the acquisition of YuniNetworks, the switch technology to support applications that deliver such explosive bandwidth."

GANGES was defined with the help of the Terabit Router development community in order to address the existing bottleneck at the Core of the IP data network. ISPs can take advantage of the device's concatenated mode, thereby enabling maximum use of 10-Gigabit bandwidth. This allows the core router to handle the bursting nature of aggregated IP data traffic and is available as a single "big fat pipe" for OC-192c/STM-64 or four smaller pipes for OC-48c/STM-16.

GANGES also supports channelized traffic, a requirement for the big carrier-class ATM switches. ATM switches use the channels to provision the switch on STS boundaries. This capability enables the carrier to efficiently provision the bandwidth based on customer need and priority. GANGES can split the 10-Gigabit OC-192/STM-64 into 16 channels of 622Mbps STS-12, four channels of 2.5Gbps or any logical combination.

GANGES will also transmit and receive 10-Gigabit Ethernet over SONET/SDH by utilizing the Flexbus-4 system interface (see Figure 2). "This is another market first for AMCC. We designed the Flexbus-4 system interface to support both PoS and ATM traffic in compliance with OIF's SPI-4 system interface," said John LoMedico, marketing director AMCC. "Flexbus-4 also continues AMCC's support of the direct map mode, already offered in our OC-12 and OC-48 framer families."

The direct map mode enables users to map any type of traffic directly into the SONET/SDH envelope. This mode is perfect for first-generation platforms supporting 10-Gigabit Ethernet over SONET and meets the technology requirements to support the emerging IEEE 802.2ae proposal for 10-Gigabit Ethernet. "AMCC's GANGES framer has been used in Nortel Networks' 10-Gigabit Ethernet technology prototype which demonstrates compatibility with the huge optical installed base of OC-192c and DWDM equipment," said Rod Wilson, director, 10-Gigabit Ethernet Program, Nortel Networks. "There is an Ethernet renaissance happening, where demands for increased interoperability are being coupled with the need for higher optical bandwidth. The GANGES will enable companies to build LAN, MAN and WAN compatible infrastructures."

In addition, the GANGES has a separate interface dedicated to handle SONET Automatic Protection Switching (APS) for all line interface options. APS, the framework defined by SONET to enable equipment and line protection, is a critical feature for providing carrier-class service quality. By incorporating a dedicated APS port in hardware, GANGES users can easily meet the GR253 specification calling for detection and switch over in less then 50ms.

The device provides full section and line overhead processing, and supports framing, scrambling/descrambling, alarm signal insertion and detection, and bit-interleaved parity (B1/B2) processing. The GANGES can be used in conjunction with four S3457s, AMCC's recently announced OC-48 serialization/deserialization (SERDES) device with a 4-bit LVDS, to create a 4 x OC-48/48c framer/SERDES solution (see Figure 3).

This combination represents a large decrease in real estate over existing framer/SERDES solutions, making it the industry's smallest available footprint. The device can also be combined with the company's S3091/S3092 mux/demux devices, providing a complete OC-192/192c SONET/SDH Framer/PHY chipset solution for SONET/SDH and optical networking applications (see Figure 4).

The GANGES features Independent Loop timing on with a single OC-192/192c line side interface or four OC-48/48c line side interfaces. This allows a service provider to interface to multiple networks that could have independent time domains, allowing the support of multiple carriers from the same line card (see Figure 1).

Pricing and Availability

Packaged in a 624-pin CBGA and manufactured in 0.18(mu) CMOS, the GANGES (S19202) is priced at $725 in quantities of 1000. Currently sampling to development partners, volume production is scheduled for Q3, 2000.
