Maybe. Maybe not. Addressing the bandwidth limitation is what's so important. Both 3dfx and nvidia have said that today's eDRAM fab processes are limiting to what else can be done on the chip. You notice that neither of them have used it yet.

The GigaPixel tiling technology that 3dfx recently acquired has 1/10th the bandwidth requirements of the traditional SGI Z-buffer rendering pipeline.

But PS-2 uses eDRAM because even dual RAMBUS chips aren't fast enough. So do bitboys (or so they claim). So who knows? All I can guarentee you is that it will be addressed.
