What would it take for us to a protracted bear market?

high unemployment. And I don't see that happening. There are lot's of great new ideas being investigated with good reward prospects for the entrepreneurial spirit. Creativity is accelerating and will have a constantly renewed source of highly skilled laborers as first generation dot coms fail and other ideas are tried. Engineering, biochemical, health, electronics, etc., and so much more fall into the same situation. As one company fails to pan out another snatches up the talent. I saw it happen a number of times in "biotech" companies. Things didn't pan out and everyone had new jobs within weeks. There are a lot of great ideas being pursued, and practical solutions will continue to materialize. And maybe, companies won't be as profitable as people hoped so stock prices stop having vertical moves. It won't cause a protracted bear market where people go jobless. Just bring valuation to muted levels.

OK, lets here the raging bear market Nikkei/Japanese debacle scenario. It can't just because we have big trade deficits, can it?

Mike: here is a bullish view on NAZ. And that thread is an interesting thread.

I personally don't see the bear market yet, not until the economic downturn. When will it come? Nobody knows. If Greenspan raises interest rate too fast, it may come sooner than people realize.
As for Cramer, I think he just got one more slap on his face due to his big mouth. But I do think there is a possibility for TSCM to find a buyer. Here is a thread about IPO Lockup. Maybe you already know. ipolockup.com
