*OT* JDN, I think you are underestimating Dell here...or do not fully understand their strategy....Dell, for years, has been "surfing" off of others' technology...ie...they are not first-to-market, but they carefully study "others" work...and they (better) imitate that which can be duplicated. It has allowed them to save on R&D, and increase the bottom line, ROI.. Now, you may say, "Well, at some pt., they have to invest ( high % like others) in R&D....But that's what was said (too) before Dell got into workstations, servers...and so far, Dell has done well in those are areas......by nibbling its way up the food chain.. I do agree...that the game is now (much) more complicated for Dell....the low-hanging fruit has been picked.......areas such as storage, and high-end servers are more complex, and require a greater in-house effort...but I would not so easily dismiss them....first of all, they have some smart, smart guys over there (including co-COO Van der Slice, who knows all of IBM secrets).....Michael Dell is still young, still hungry....and don't forget, his name is on the company (it is a pride thing, you know)........second, the PC biz will be Dell's cash cow for many years, allowing them to invest in other bizs that take time to develop.. Dell takes baby steps...it is hard to argue with their success thus far..without Y2K and the Taiwan earthquake...last year's results would have been much better.. Although Dell is only a small part of my portfolio, and I do not anticipate Dell's stock doing anything close to '90's performance, it should do better than most large cap techs IMO going forward...
