Dear johnd:

The monkey will soon be on jj's back. What will he do?
It is a legal standard that the punishment should fit the crime. So, if I can paraphrase, "MSFT is guilty of being a monopoly in the PC world on Intel type machines and illegally used it's monoploly to the detriment of ...
I guess it's competitors and the public, tying its IE browser illegally ... blah blah..."

Ok, so what punishment fits the above, proposed by the doj and 19 skates?

The punishment will have to be very specific, to prevent the above abuses from recurring, but without harming the public consumer. Kind of a tightrope walk for the rather rotund jj, don't you think?

jj could send the breakup proposal remedy back to doj if he thinks it will not work, but this is probably doubtful ...

This is probably the final scenes in Act iii of a total of iiii Acts. The chance for a settlement is gone.

Act iiii will reveal the true colors of the players:
billy g -stubborn, proud, brave
ballsmer -stubborn, fighter, tough
reno -stubborn, bully, vindictive
jj -stubborn, narrow minded, weak

"Will it be stuck here for another 3-6 months"
It depends on what happens tomorrow. The feedback I'm getting is about 50% my colleauges think it will be up big tomorrow & 50% down big. Most are looking for msft to have good upward movement the second half this year. However Lehman Brothers came out with a one year target $85 last Monday. Really can't call a price next 6 months until we find out what the penalty for msft will be tomorrow.

johnd, I see little downside risk from here with Ballmer granting the options at the price he did. MSFT obviously sees value in their own stock at this price. However, I think MSFT is dead money in the near term relative to the NAZ. Could creep up to 80 or so. Needs some good news for a change to catch fire.

I've never seen a quality stock suffer from so much bad news. Most of it is smoke and mirrors, but perception is everything. I'm still holding most of my position, but I did sell some recently to fund an NTAP purchase.

Ironically, the only positive thing about all this is all the bad news and mudslinging. I haven't visited this thread for a while, and I was dismayed to read all the fighting going on here. The negative comments I've seen on this thread today are more indicative of a bottom having being reached than anything else. There always have been MSFT naysayers, and they've always been a little poorer than the rest of us.
