deem tape to be unnecessary? That seems a little far-fetched to me, as tape is minimally
better for long term storage, though disks have the advantage of being random access and
thus retrieval is faster.


Maybe not far fetched. Isn't this the whole concept behind a storage-area-network? Doesn't Veritas software allow for backup within the network?

Are tape drives about to go the way of that drawer full of floppies that I used to keep?

Talk about making a fool of oneself. When I start talking about technology it's a sure thing.
