As I understand it- the dad went to the apartment and found it locked- the boyfriend's family had sold all their furniture and neighbors said they had gone to America. So Juan called America to ask his relatives to watch out for his kid.

I don't think it was easy for him to get permission to come here. I would guess Castro didn't want HIM leaving the island (of course I don't have super secret information like so many people seem to have, and I can't read minds and judge people the way other people seem to be able to do- I have a certain number of facts I can arrange in a limited number of ways)- I don't know what kind of pressure he is under but I would guess there is some. He has a large family in Cuba.

More than that I do not know. He was and is obviously concerned about Elian. By all reports- even the Miami Cubans (except for that one cousin who made all the abuse claims) he was and is a good father. That is all I know. But even if he was a crappy father if Elian is NOT a US citizen and does NOT want asylum it is not our problem. It would legally be a domestic Cuban problem.
