Cha2,

<< QCOM is YTD green ... that should be this fall >>

That is my thinking. I can wait, but it is SO gratifying to see GREEN.

<< the kick that Dr J uses FUD >>

A skillful practitioner of FUD "uses understatement and humor to make his points", and does not want to be caught making "inaccurate claims". Let me put it to you this way, I read the statements of Dr. Jacobs, VERY carefully.

Nothing wrong with FUD if practiced skillfully, IMO, and it is not a matter of integrity.

I competed head to head against IBM for a dozen or so years and respected their skill in applying it. Competed against NCR in the same time frame an saw a rather bumbling use of same (and I used to carry in my briefcase a copy of the consent decree issued against them as a result of this).

<< wry humor - which I assume your comment about CDMA 2000 >>

That was indeed my feeble attempt at same.

Cha2,

Re: FUD

<< Do wish you would get off the kick that Dr J uses FUD ... I have found in observing his statements as closely as I have been able to, that unlike so many others in similar positions he uses understatement and humor to make his points. And I have yet to find any claim he has made inaccurate. That is about as far from FUD as I know. To compare his integrity to that of so many of the FUDers elsewhere is a great disservice to the truth and therefore your own credibility IMO >>

I've commented once on this, butI am moved to comment in more detail.

The "Acronym Finder" defines offers this definition of FUD:

1. FUD: Fear, Uncertainty, & Doubt

It also offers this slang derivative

2. FUD: Fouled Up Disinformation (polite form)

... and it introduces another variant

3. FUDSI: Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt, Superstition and Ignorance

As a professional tech seller & marketer (which some would call "peddler") I am familiar with all 3 definitions that are applied. I consider definition 1 to be the proper usage of the term and definition 2 to be its misapplied derivative, and definition 3 is abhorrent to me. I am familiar with the origin of FUD, the disciplines involved in employing it, its use in dealing with competition, and its misuse.

As a former foot soldier in the "Holy Wars", working all sides, I am also familiar with all 3 definitions.

As a long time participant on the various Qualcomm threads as well as the Nokia and Ericsson threads I have observed that the term is used there more than on any other threads I frequent. When it is used (overused) on these threads the more negative connotation of definition 2 evidently is being applied and sometimes when it is used it smacks more of FUDSI than FUD.

As an investor, I am ever wary of FUDSI.

<< To compare his integrity to that of so many of the FUDers elsewhere >>

When I said "Some of the good Doctor's brilliance lies in his magnificent use of FUD (and FUD is only effective when you practice it as skillfully as he does). IBM may have invented the art, but he has perfected it". I was in no way questioning his integrity.

Be it known that I have never knowingly questioned the integrity of Dr. Jacobs. On the other hand I would like to also make it perfectly clear that when Dr. Jacobs makes a statement I do not necessarily accept it as dogma. My admiration for the man does not extend that quite that far. John Chambers, maybe. Dr. J., not yet. <g>

To me FUD does NOT mean "spin", "misinformation", or "disinformation". To you evidently it does.

Part of my reason for ranting in my post to you, was that just prior to posting I had just waded through a mass of FUD, FUD (2), and FUDSI on 2 Qualcomm threads and the Nokia thread.

While I don't want to beat a horse to death, I thought it important that I clarify my usage of the term and distinguish it from what is, perhap's the connotation you apply to it. We do after all, bump into each other on a lot of threads, and debate several topics. I suspect we will be doing so for some time. I hope so anyway.

Comments from anyone on FUD as it is applied to Gorilla Gaming are welcome to me.

PS: On the subject of BetaMax: At almost the same moment you posted "Will the latter day Betamax (perhaps the analogy) triumph?" , I had made a BetaMax post on the Qualcomm S&P 500 thread which I knew would be interpeted as being interpreted as a cdma2000/W-CDMA analogy (and it was in fact interpreted that way) so I chuckled and slipped my cdma2000 retort into my post to you.
