It takes a village to raise a child.
Oh please. It didn't play well for Hillary either.

If everyone who "nursed a child back to life" were to have a legal claim on it, what a mess we'd have!
Doctors, nurses, psychologists, relatives, social workers, teachers, all asserting their rights to a piece of the kid. Kindness does not make for a legal claim. But parenthood does.

Desertion.... nope- sorry. That just isn't an accurate term. Juan did not leave his son- his son was taken from him. The 90 miles from Cuba to here is a much greater distance than from Miami to Daytona (or whatever). Juan called the relatives as soon as he heard what happened to make sure they would take care of Elian. There was a close family relationship- juan DID know that the child was in good hands. He trusted the Miami relatives, knowing they would care for Elian until he was returned. Unfortunately the Miamians had a different agenda. They wanted Juan to move here. They wanted the family united. At the same time, Juan was brought to meet with Castro, who is as savvy as they come and probably brought a great deal of pressure on the father. With many family members still in Cuba, Juan had to weigh his actions. Perhaps, had he thought Elian were in immediate danger, he would have stolen a rickety boat and rowed to Fla, who knows? But he knew Elian was safe. He thought he was coming back.
No-desertion is just not an accurate word, and we know too little about the circumstances to use it. I wonder if he was being told that arrangements were being made for Elian to be returned- yadayada...
I hope you took the time to read the excellent article in the NY Times- it seemed very even-handed.
I think we all agree that Castro is the villain.
