My guess is they must have a program that scans and automatically buys all stocks that are up. And, have a "close all positions" button. What puzzles me is stocks come in all price ranges. How do they determine how many shares of each do you buy

No automatic buying is used. Basket buys are used rarely but on occasion (might accidently buy a weak stock). Though we have some groups of traders that use them allot. Yes, there is a sell all positions button and it gets used quite often. When buying, usually multiple order are sent out (SOES,SNET swipes,ECN,s) without regard for how many get filled. If all the orders get filled and they feel they have too many, frequently they will call out and ask if anyone wants some shares (that are in the money) and the floor broker immediately transfers the shares from one account to the other. Or they will offer out a few as the rally continues.
