She brought Elian to a place where He could have a life of His own Well, actually , she almost killed him, along with herself, and I am not convinced that she did this for the pure reasons you are ascribing, but we can disagree on this, as no one will ever know. BUt I'm curious. Why exactly does having another child negate Juan's paternity or constitute desertion? All of life is progression, moving on. Are you saying perhaps that Juan should NOT have remarried, and just lived with women the way Elizabeth was living with a man? Why is that NOT moving on? According to an interview with El Loco's old girlfriend, El Loco wanted a child and she refused to bear him one. It stands to reason he would have made the same demand of E. Do you honestly think Elizabeth would have never had more children? That's just not logical. But even if she never did, I fail to see that Juan's actions make him less of a father to Elian. If you accept that premise, then you must also believe that E. was emotionally "deserting" Elian by living out of wedlock with a man who was a stranger to Elian. She exposed Elian to a situation that is known to be disruptive and confusing to children-- that of a temporary dad, of people who say they care and then come and go in your life. Actually, Juan provided more of a stable environment in some ways than E.
