Paul,

You wrote "If Redhat and all those linux selling companies actually made applications instead of just slapping a cover on linux and calling it their own, then maybe linux would be a worthy contender."

Corel is in the process of porting every Windows app they have to Linux. I believe they just worked Corel Draw for Linux to a Beta release. Will that do?

Mike

apul, They all have their own apps which they sell as well as their open linux versions. Their model is to sell service, give away the OS and sell custom apps. It is viable, look at Sun, HP etc who do that and charge for the OS.
As minnow said more and more players are porting their apps to linux. This rate shows no sign of slowing and I estimetaae that in two years Linux will be usealy the masses.
Many can use it now, but most will get totally bogged down once they get kicked out of the GUI and have to change parameters, partitions etc.

Windows has automated all those tasks into gui point and clicks with assorted wizards.
