Bruce, A couple of problems with Juan requesting asylum for his family now visiting here. His family still in Cuba has been kept in a compound controlled by Castro's thugs since Juan left Cuba. I read two or three reports on this, and then, they disappeared from the media. SOP! Also, he and his family are constantly in the presence of, or very near, Cuban "diplomats" at all times while visiting here. In other words, he is still in danger if he tries to defect. He can not expect to be protected by the DOJ because of their overt cooperation with the Castro regime.~H~

The best thing that could happen to Elian would be if his family now in the U.S. would request asylum.

I believe that Elian's father has other children who remain in Cuba; are you suggesting that he abandon them? On what grounds would he request asylum?

I have also not sorted out all of the legalities; conflicting opinions are a dime a dozen. But if it isn't illegal to refuse to turn a child over to his father, than it ought to be.
