Here is quite a thorough explanation of the custody question -

A 17-page article on Miami in the last few days, anecdotal vignettes - miaminewtimes.com

The INS has been given quite total power by, i understand, that faction of the ultra-right Republicans who felt the agency needed that power to reduce the number of brown people in their vicinity more quickly and cheaply. How amusing to see them hoist on their own petard when it results in the loss of their captive child.

>>I explained last night why the INS is given this special power. <<

Yes, I read it, and I thought it made a lot of sense. Apparently, however, it did not satisfy Jim. I'm looking forward to hearing from him why not. Jim is articulate and polite and has expressed an appreciation of thoughtful discussion so I'm hopeful he will provide some insight.

>>I do not like how what used to be a law-and-order party has been transformed into a party of paranoids who believe any government action is bad<<

Unlike you, I am not a member of a political party, although the Republican Party would be my natural home. I couldn't possibly join a party that has been co-opted by movements that scare me to death. The religious component of the far right is scary because it's not feasible to have a public debate and reach any consensus on issues with people who rely on the supernatural for absolute and incontrovertible authority on public issues. The "paranoid" component of the far right is scary because it ironically directs its energies against the very government that sustains all our rights, and because its motivation is so totally incomprehensible.

It would be easy to dismiss them as paranoid (take a pill) if there were not so many of them and if they did not have so much influence. So I keep trying to understand their point of view. I put in a lot of time last year on the Y2K thread asking questions and trying to find some explanation I could get my head around, to no avail. The Y2K crowd saw the face of the devil in FEMA, a pussycat Federal agency if I ever saw one. Here it's the Justice Department.

Since you've been watching the "paranoids" from up close, do you think that they "believe any government action is bad" or is it just government action when the government is under the control of the opposition party or perhaps just the greatest-SOB-of-all-time, Clinton aka Klinton?
