Dan,

When oil prices went from $40+ dollars a barrel in the 70's to $10+ a barrel in the 80's - which was after production started coming in from the North Sea fields, the North Slope of Alaska, and increased production from those companies and countries that didn't join OPEC.

I think that the biggest reason for the drop in price in the early 1980's was the Iran-Iraq war. Both countries started selling a lot of oil to finance their war.

RE:"If Exxon, Royal Dutch Shell, etc had been permitted to join OPEC, what do you think a barrel of oil would be going for now? If they hadn't been blocked from joining by law do you think they wouldn't have?"

"OPEC". Organization of petroleum exporting COUNTRIES.
Exxon, RD are customers. Your premise is moot...

Clearly, most of your posts seem to contain the word "allow" as in "government control".
Again, I haven't see much that the government got involved in that didn't get screwed up. All at taxpayer expense.
