We don't KNOW why Dad didn't come here for five months, whether he was being watched and controlled by Castro, which seems likely to me, or was in a bar drinking beer, which someone on the Elian thread alleges (somewhat irresponsibly as he hasn't cited his source either)but that is not what I asked you. I asked you for some reliable source backing up your statement that he was an absentee father in Cuba and that he provided no financial support (Unless you are only referring to his being absentee when Elian was in Miami and I think then that you've been unclear and inaccurate. Absentee parent usually refers to a parent who hasn't been present for a long time, if ever, or involved in the raising of the child, which isn't true in this case).

As for the machine gun, your reiteration of this puzzles me. What good would it do to confront a soldier who went in under orders, and did what he was supposed to do? I almost wish there were videos- it might make the situation clearer. DId the agent realize Elian was in the closet? How quickly did he move the gun down or away? What was said by Donato, relatives, agents?
Perhaps at that point JUan was just so happy to get his son back, he wasn't about to confront the people who retrieved him and perhaps apologies were made, and it was settled privately. The damage was done.

I've wondered what the atmosphere was in that house - middle of the night-a man with no connection to the family (Donato) trying to hide the child in a closet. My guess is Elian was terrified long before the gun appeared. And that's the Miami relatives' fault, regardless of the reasons they did it. They lost sight of Elian's immediate well-being in their efforts to keep him. They used him mercilessly and I would question their fitness as guardians, whatever the outcome of this!
There are so many factors, so many laws, so much emotion, that I am still very undecided about a lot of this, but it bothers me when people muddy the waters further with unsubstantiated or misleading arguments, and that's why I was asking.

Why did dad take 5 months for dad to come get his "beloved" son?

Has it ever entered your mind that an ordinary resident of a provincial town in Cuba - or, for that matter, practically any other 3rd world country - does not simply run over to the airport, buy a ticket, and head out for the US? Aren't there minor issues like passports, visas, US dollars to spend, etc., that have to be dealt with? He couldn't go anywhere until the governments involved told him he could, as you would know very well if you'd thought about it, instead of jumping to the convenient conclusion.

Why did he ask Reno to use storm troupers?

Do you honestly believe that Reno called him up to ask his approval? Do you think he even knew the raid was taking place until it was finished?

Think, please.
