Dear Jozef: The current prices for Star Office, an "Office type Suite", are $49.95 for WP, Spreadsheet, DB, and MM. And a competitive upgrade means you have a legal copy of all that software from someone else. The price above is for the FULL version. The prices you qouted are for their complete Suites. Lotus did charge more money, but Word Perfect and others charged $250 to $350 for the full suite when Microsoft charged $600 to $1000 (equivalent to enterprise) full version of Office. Pete

Dear Jozef: RE: "Speaking of bloat, the next time you install, go to Custom install, and install only the bare bone product, it it really bothers you to have things like Spell Checker, Thesaurus, Grammar checker, ability to open non-native format (Lotus, Word Perfect), mail merge, ability to connect to a database, ability to include graphics in your document etc. I have a 40 GB hard disk that I bought for < $300, so for me cost of having these goodies (bloat for you) is only a few pennies. If the GUI and WYSIWYG bothers you, you can always go back to Word Perfect for DOS and the highly intuitive user interface (blank screen)." Wordstar had all that, but is only 10 MB. Larger programs take longer to load. They usually also take longer to do their job. My Wordstar v7.0 takes about 5% to 10% to do the same job as Word. You miss the cost in time of what you do (it is usually buried by the faster hardware you run the new version on). Also you must relearn Word at each new version. (this could be saved staying at the older version (that what I tell people if, they do not need any of the new features)). The user interface for WS has not changed in the 6 versions I have used. I like software that does not throw away a good working UI for another (grandfather the old interface). Even a utility, like MS Backup, can not read backups generated by the previous version. Try it. Take something on Win95, back it up to floppy, then try to restore it to Win98. Win95 machines can not talk to Win98 machines. They can through a Windows NT or Linux intermediary however. Pete
