Smith guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend Denna Moody. Smith killed Moody in April 1997 because she refused to abort their preborn child. The jury heard evidence that Moody had been pregnant by Smith before, and that he had pressured her to have an abortion in that case as well. Moody adamantly refused in this case. Her charred body was found in her burned car near the Van Nuys Amtrak station the next morning. Deputy District Attorney Alan Yochelson said Smith, 41, probably killed Moody at a park in Sherman Oaks after an argument, then drove the body to a business area near the train station and set the fire.
