You will still be able to put in a 950, but it will have to be a classic Athlon (K75) and not the faster Thunderbird. But since you say you have a FIC SD-11 motherboard, which uses the AMD 750 northbridge, you may be able to use a Thunderbird if slockets (socket -> slot adapters) do end up being produced. But that is an uncertainty for now. We'll know a lot more in a month or so.

I won't have to deal with a slocket...since I will replace my current board with a socket A. However my understanding is that the classic Athlon is being phased.

Is that incorrect?

Since he's lucky enough not to have the KX-133 chipset, won't he be able to obtain a T-bird with a Slot A interface through Pricewatch?
