Dear Richard..
I respect your views very much, responsible parenthood and responsible fatherhood is a taxing job, assumption that Elian father is one may be stretching the limit of responsibility to its outer circumference.

No one can do a better job for raising children than parents, I concede. However, the reality is that sometime we have situations where single parents have to take care on other occasions in case both the parents disappear we have institutions which I totally agree are inadequate but have helped children off the street.

In Havana and Rio thousands of children without known parent-hood perish on streets, that is a tragedy we are all a party as we turn our faces other way. Thousands of children in NY city beyond 125th Street need careful attention from parents, they don't get that attention and are in care of institutions. I agree that perfection is good to go for, but in our difficult world we need to compromise and entrust care to institutions which can protect the integrity of mind and ensure freedom of thought. The issue here is about a child future in a free society or a closed society, what kind of child Elian would be in a society that offers him opportunity or the one that denies him his basic rights as grown up human. That is the point which needs to be resolved everything else is immaterial, if this child had come from France or Germany it would not have become an issue at the first place it is an issue since the alternative for him is life in a draconian dungeon system. Those who enjoy this great country what you term as US do not realise the opportunity and incentive it gives as a matter of birth right, we the lesser people would like the same for our kids too and if we don?t have it the ones who get it should not be denied.

<<I would have to assume that you are legitimising the abduction of your children given the "right" scenario? >>

Yes, I do agree to that, you are right, if I was caught up in Afghanistan under Taliban's fundamentalist puritan rule and my wife escapes with my children and Mulla Umer sends me over with whole of my family as hostage to bring the boys back home and my wife family in US try to get custody in such circumstances I would hope that Sate refuses the custody to me. Under the rule of Mulla Umer and Saddam?s and Castro?s of this world, I pray that millions of children?s be freed from these shackles of slavery. I hope they may have chance like you had to break those metal clutches and fixed mental mind sets that make them in future bigots like Osama bin Laden. Cuba is a puritan state and have misery written all over, the people of Cuba and Elian deserve better, once he is in US he should not be sent back to hell until he understands the difference between free mind and brainwashed mind, I would expect the same thing for my children.

If Pakistan my country of birth becomes a state where if alongwith democracy my right of thinking is taken away I will agree that my children escape that environment. That would be good for humanity, it is only on pluralism and mutual acceptability we have created a civil society, I stand on ?world is one country? but I do make distinction between those who call that we are divided between infidels and heavenly humans. We are all human, no one has preference over other and we are born free we need to stay free, a child cannot be set in metal cage where escape is only possible through high seas and his mind in permanent state of fear. Presently it is reported that 900 children languish in Afghans jails as hostages for return of their Fathers who happen to be dissidents and are up in arms against the excesses of Talibans.

Castro represents that screwed up "communist" system that destroyed the innovation in great Russian nation and have kept so far China under rule of party that has following of 10 million in a population of a 1200 million.. It is all about standing up to a system and telling them you don"t deserve a free child until you change the way you govern and give this child as a young man to throw Castro out through the ballot box. Until he does not have that right Cuban demands are nothing but illegitimate. A free child cannot be sent back to sure slavery. Most respectfully.. Ike
