Ike, long time reader of the thread, really appreciate your insights and hard work.

I agree 100% with you comments on Elian. Thanks for bringing it up and for taking a courageous position.

OT......

I concur with Condor that indeed you are adventurous with this subject...

I too disagree with you...

Your example of being tied up in Afghanistan has one big difference... you would be behind the State taking control of your children and as their father that would be your privilege and your decision is noble... In this case Elian's father is actively attempting to get him back... a selfish decision? well perhaps... but as his father it is his right and duty to provide the best for his child... It is mine to disagree with a child's rearing... not mine to take control... (unless of course there is an abusive situation... that does not seem to be the case here)

Anyway greetings to you and yours

Hi Ike,
Thanks for your response and personal insights into this situation.
In closing and without belabouring the topic and respecting all opinons on this emotional situation I will conclude with the following "very" hypothetical scenario.

May 6/2020 Cuba( Reuters ) A then young man named Elian Gonzalez who was returned to Cuba by the United States Department of Justice after a spectacular and famous flight to freedom in a sensational episode occuring in 1999 has been elected President of Cuba today. This historical moment in the history of Cuba, as it enters the world community of democracies, was best described by Mr. Gonzalez.
"It is with tremendous gratitude today that I thank the US Department of Justice for following accepted International Law many years ago in the face of opposition and adversity and returning me to my father those many years ago. That singular, lawful and controversial act, allowed me to return to Cuba. My life was changed forever, as I could not escape the monumental events that began to shape my intellect and responsibilities, and my destiny was layed before me. The demonstration of freedom and lawfullness that was displayed by the United States of America in the face of adverse and unpopular sentiment dictated my course in life. I dedicated myself to the freedom of the Cuban people as I had seen the light and today that commitment has come to fruition."
President Gonzales today decreed a re-establishment of ties with the United States and the establishment of an independant law and court system in step with the rest of the free world.

A bit of a "stretch", wasn't it? But then...hmmm.......
Thanks IKE for giving me the opportunity to express my opinion in a forum where I knew opposing views would be tolerated. One thing we can agree on, " regardless of our individual take on this situation, we are all of common purpose when it comes to the well being of the child"
Back to lurking.....
Wishing you and your family love, health, happiness and prosperity.
Richard
