Fingerprint scanning isn't very reliable, as I understand it, because you need a special scanner to read the fingerprints off your fingers, and if you have dirt on your fingers, it could lead to a false negative. The public would demand a 100% reliable biometrics methodology. I don't know what would be measured, but it sounds like iris scanning is a popular target. I don't know how many bytes are needed, but issues of security of the card, durability, and so forth are an issue. Certainly the DRXR lasercard is the most secure card, esp. in terms of being able to duplicate them, which is why they are used by state and INS.
