For the record, I prefer that this not become a moderated thread. There are a lot of reasons, the most important being that if, God forbid, Frank or any moderator gets in a car accident and goes into a coma for ten years, someone needs to take over. The interesting thing is this thread has the least need to be moderated because 1)the manual is the prerequisite that filters the rude posters and 2) the rude posters who do read the manual are promptly handled by the other 99.9% in the folder who know how to conduct themselves in public.

Re: Moderated Discussion

I appreciate you bringing that to my attention, Greg, but I won't be making any such application. I'm not wise enough to assume "god like" powers over others. Besides, a number of valued contributors began their association with G&K in a confrontational manner, and I might have hit the <kill switch> prematurely. I'd rather rely on group dynamics and SI's terms of use to weed out those whose sole purpose is to disrupt polite and productive discourse.

The threat of Oracle and Siebel competing has come up many times, and the fm cautions that the result of Gorilla wars are unpredictable. I'm watching it closely, as I did the csco/lu faceoff, and am monitoring comments from experts in both camps. Thus far, it appears to be more of a war of words than substance, but it has the potential to impact our investments. Since we have many more sebl than orcl investors on G&K, I'd appreciate any insights you can offer.

>>Moderated Discussion<<

That's an interesting idea, Greg, and one that probably deserves a bit more discussion.

I'm glad to see that Uncle Frank is reluctant to apply. It is a heavy-handed remedy, and smacks of censorship. But I can imagine a situation where it might be useful, and since getting that power is a one-time opportunity, it should not be rejected lightly.

Many good, and beneficial rules have the potential to restrict freedom and the potential for abuse. Nevertheless, most of us live in societies with many rules because rules support the greater good.

We just witnessed an episode where a single individual slapped down every effort to offer an olive branch. Frank had to spend time and effort to deal with this, including making appeals to SI management. Those appeals were apparently successful, for now, but I can imagine a similar situation where they would not be. What if the offender signed on to SI two weeks ago, and we were that person's first and only victims. Current SI rules would have us take a lot of abuse before anything could be done. Yet this is something we could have handled ourselves if this were a moderated thread.

Frank could get the "power" with the intention of never using it. Like free flood insurance on a mountain top. Probably not necessary, but it adds a bit of security. It should not be a first line of defense, but a court of last resort.

Like Mike Buckley said, 99.9% of the people out there know how to conduct themselves on a public forum. I'm just not convinced that it is beneficial for the good 99.9% to suffer when the 0.1% shows up insulting everyone. Besides, I trust Frank, I think we all do.
