I looked at the semiconductor holder SMH and had mixed reaction. I am not sure how this basket will perform specially considering that we are in an extended semi cycle, it would be interesting to check the performance of the SMH basket of stocks in the past as compared to say SOXX (broader semiconductor index). However, if one compares INTC to SOXX it seems that INTC has performed much better than that index and has not been subject to cyclical variations of that index. Since the SMH includes other semiconductor companies and equipment makers, I would presume its performance subject to the cyclical variations in that business. So it is not clear to me that one would be better off buying the HOLDR SMH compared to just say buying INTC by dollar cost averaging.
