A Hamed-Tapia bout? No sooner had we discussed it here than it appears that one is indeed in the works...albeit with hitches. Did you expect any less?Hamed-Tapia bout faces network glitch By Dan Rafael USA TODAY, Pg C3 The glitzy ring entrances could last as long as a 12-round fight if Naseem Hamed and Johnny Tapia, two of boxing's most flamboyant champions, meet for a proposed fight Aug. 19 on HBO. Hamed's brother Riath, who handles business affairs for USA TODAY's No. 1-ranked featherweight, met with Tapia's wife/manager, Theresa, Wednesday and Thursday in New York to try and hash out a deal for a fight in Las Vegas. Tapia, USA TODAY's No. 4 bantamweight, defended his title May 6, but announced before that bout his intention to move up to featherweight. Both sides want the fight, but stumbling blocks are Tapia's purse and his allegiance to rival network Showtime. Hamed spokesman George Azar says Tapia was offered ''in excess of $1 million.'' ''Johnny and Theresa walked away from an offer that's bigger than anything he's ever had,'' Azar says. ''We're hoping they will come back to the table. Johnny is the guy we'd like to fight.'' According to Theresa Tapia, the two sides are ''still in the talking stages, but Johnny very much wants the fight. But Johnny already gets paid a lot of money by Showtime, so yes, it wasn't a lucrative enough offer for him to skip to another network. This is not only a financial thing -- it's also the loyalty. Showtime has done a lot for us.'' One reason Tapia refused the offer was because of the strings attached. Although his deal with Showtime has expired, they are working on a new one. Still, boxing boss Jay Larkin has given his blessing for Tapia to fight Hamed on HBO before returning to Showtime. Hamed fights exclusively on HBO. However, according to Larkin, HBO is insisting that Tapia commit to HBO for three fights in order to get the Hamed bout, which would be the initial one. ''I want Johnny on Showtime and he also wants that. But I would not stand in the way of him going over there to face Hamed. I can live with that,'' Larkin says. ''I told him 'We love you and this is your home. Go fight Hamed and come home with the belt.' ''But if HBO makes those demands, I wouldn't be able to live with that, and I told the Tapias that. They want to stay here and they know that under those circumstances, it would be very difficult for us to have a future relationship.'' HBO vice president Kery Davis denies the network has asked for futures on Tapia, saying Hamed wants only a rematch clause -- the norm when negotiating a title fight -- should he lose.
