Well, another of the little sweet cherry trees is dying. I am baffled. All the rest of the trees are doing fine. All the sweet cherries are in the front yard, so are four young peach trees, two apricots, and two plums. That yard is on the east side. In the side yard (north) are two sour cherries, one apple, and two pears. On the south side of the house, close to the foundation are two figs. The figs aren't very vigorous, but they were just whips. All the rest were somewhat mature, five to seven feet tall and with a lot of branches and leaves.

The two cherries that are dying were from different nurseries, so that's not it. I think it's something to do with the soil, but I don't know what. The dog does defecate and urinate nearby, but she doesn't do it right where the trees are. Probably some of the material gets washed into the roots when it rains or when we irrigate. The yard slopes, gently, and they are the only trees downhill from the dog's "spot." Do you suppose that's enough to kill the trees?

If I remove them and replant them, as a last ditch effort to save them, should I cut them back?

We had blueberry pancakes yesterday morning. Seems every year is becoming a bumper crop lately. My two older kids picked about 6 1qt. baskets already, and the real crop hasn't matured yet.

The rest of the fruit trees are doing rather well with the exception of two of my apricots which seem to have contracted some type of bug eating into the trunks and I'm thinking of whacking them down this year.

We had another baby in April, so the garden isn't looking so clean and neat, though it will give up what we need.

On a lighter note, I did weed some of it yesterday. I just took the push mower right down the rows, and bingo! there's the onions, found the peppers, and neatened up the rows of beans nicely. Now if I can get a bunch of lawn cuttings over the cut weeds, I might be able to keep the weeds at bay for the rest of the season.

Raining really hard here right now. Yes, it's been an unusually wet summer here, though the heat and humidity have still been present.
